You’ve planned ahead and now the night before the move is upon you. If you’ve planned appropriately, this transition will be easy! Here are a few more tips on what you can do the night before and the day of to make the move as painless as possible. Most importanly, hang in there – you’re almost ready to enjoy your new home!
- Have a box or bag for what you will need during the move – important documents, checkbook, medicines, etc.
- Consider packing an overnight bag for the few days of the move so that you will have all your necessary items right at hand.
- Pack the last of your belongings. Mark boxes that need to be opened first. These are the things you will need on the first day in your new home, like cleaning supplies, remote control, sheets and towels, toilet paper, the coffee pot.
- Use coolers to transfer refrigerated and frozen food and pack those at the last minute.
- Have cash on hand for incidentals and tips for the movers.
- On moving day, have someone available to direct the movers. Walk through your home with the movers before they start to load the truck. Once they have finished, check that all items are loaded before the movers close the truck.
- For hanging clothes, moving companies often have standing wardrobe boxes, which can be filled on the morning of the move. Check with the moving company to see if they supply wardrobe boxes.
- Don’t overdo the unpacking. It can be as overwhelming as preparing for the move. Unpack the bedrooms, kitchen and bathrooms first.
- At the end of the move, just relax – it’s been a long day. And enjoy your new home!
